Every seating group needs surface area. Outdoor tables must be stable in wind, resistant to condensation rings and spills, and light enough to reposition. Choosing the right materials is the single most important decision in specifying outdoor hospitality furniture. Each material performs differently, and the best pieces often combine several to optimise for strength, comfort, weight, and appearance.

The dominant metal for outdoor furniture. Aluminium is lightweight, naturally corrosion-resistant (it forms a protective oxide layer), and accepts powder coating beautifully. It will not rust. For hospitality applications, we use extruded or cast aluminium components, often with thicker wall sections in high-stress areas. Powder coating in any RAL colour adds an extra layer of UV and scratch protection. Anodised aluminium offers a more metallic, industrial finish while retaining corrosion resistance.

For applications requiring maximum strength and a premium aesthetic, stainless steel is the material of choice. 304 grade provides excellent corrosion resistance for most outdoor environments. 316 marine grade adds molybdenum for superior resistance to salt-laden air and chlorinated water, making it essential for coastal resorts and poolside furniture. Stainless steel is heavier and more expensive than aluminium, so it is often reserved for high-stress components, visible frames, and luxury applications.

Carbon steel is strong and economical, but it requires complete encapsulation by powder coating to prevent rust. Any chip or scratch that exposes bare metal will eventually rust. For this reason, we generally recommend aluminium or stainless steel for outdoor furniture, reserving coated steel for covered or semi-outdoor areas where moisture exposure is limited.

Natural teak is a traditional outdoor wood prized for its natural oils that resist water, insects, and decay. Its golden-brown colour weathers to a distinguished silver-grey if left untreated. FSC-certified plantation teak is available for projects with sustainability requirements. Thermally modified ash or oak — wood that has been heat-treated to alter its cellular structure — offers a more affordable alternative with similar durability. All wood used outdoors will require periodic cleaning and re-oiling if the original colour is to be maintained. Dual Jade’s wood outdoor pieces use FSC-certified teak or thermally modified ash, finished with outdoor-rated oil or left to weather naturally.

Synthetic wicker, woven from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) around an aluminium frame, mimics the look of natural rattan but withstands UV exposure, rain, and temperature extremes without cracking or fading. It is commonly used in resort-style lounge chairs, sofas, and daybeds. The weave should be tight, UV-stabilised, and colour-fast — our specifications require these properties.

Textilene is a PVC-coated polyester mesh widely used for outdoor seating slings. It is breathable, quick-drying, and highly resistant to UV and stretching. Slings can be replaced when worn, extending the life of the frame. Textilene is common on pool loungers and casual dining chairs.

Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics represent the gold standard for outdoor upholstery. Unlike printed fabrics where colour sits on the surface, solution-dyed fibres are coloured before extrusion, locking in pigment throughout the fibre. This makes them exceptionally fade-resistant, even under intense sun. They are also water-repellent, mildew-resistant, and bleach-cleanable. For cushions exposed to rain, acrylic fabrics paired with quick-dry foam are the recommended combination.

Standard upholstery foam acts like a sponge, trapping water and promoting mildew. Outdoor cushions require reticulated (open-cell) foam that allows water to drain through rapidly. Quick-dry foams are also treated with antimicrobial additives to inhibit mould and mildew growth. Furniture in exposed locations must be heavy enough or shaped to resist wind. Cast aluminium frames, wide bases, and the option to add weight plates or sandbags are design strategies we incorporate. Stackable chairs should nest securely to prevent wind from scattering them when stored.

Outdoor seating and table surfaces should either drain water quickly or be angled to prevent pooling. Slatted tops, mesh seats, and cushions with drain channels all serve this purpose.

Outdoor cushions left in full sun can become uncomfortably hot. Light-coloured fabrics reflect more heat than dark colours. Mesh and textilene seats breathe better than solid upholstery in hot weather. Consider specifying lighter tones for sun-exposed southern terraces.

Many hotels store outdoor furniture during winter months. Stackable chairs, folding tables, and modular sofas that can be disassembled reduce storage volume. Cushions should be removable and, ideally, compatible with standard storage racks.
